Possible Trophy Cabinet page (26/2/2014)

Having made the possible menus a while back, today I worked on some possible Trophy Cabinet pages using the team leader's examples from 'Risk of Rain' as seen below...

* My first design took inspiration from the above by making it a book format. I then turned it into a card folder so it can hold the cards the player unlocks in wallets. After all, I used to have a similar folder to hold all my Pokemon cards and therefore I think a younger audience would like this. Yes, I know I said originally that it would be a Trophy Cabinet and not a Card Folder, but this is just an idea in order to fit in with my team leader's request.
  • I decided to include large text telling the player how to look at the cards and even included my original possible medals because it filled the space nicely.
  • Selecting 'NEXT' would turn the page whilst selecting 'MENU' would close the entire folder and put it away.
  • I did however, have to make the paper yellow as white looked too bland, and couldn't make two pages with card wallets work.

Feeling that the above was too bland, I decided to make the book format clearer by making the pages white as it now looked good when placed on top of another coloured surface and book.

* For my second / third design however, I took inspiration from the digital wooden shelves used to feature someone's collection of games on gog.com as seen below, since it was a pleasant and simple design that displayed things well and I felt it would be a good idea to go back and show a design for the Trophy Cabinet aspect.

With the above in mind I was able to make a wooden shelf with the player's cards on them.
  • I decided, with this design to be less 'in the player's face' by simply displaying the cards the player has unlocked, the rest being hidden until unlocked. Thus it would be more obvious for players to select them in order to read them without being told to do so (in large letters) as the former examples did.
  • I still felt however, that some red arrows had to remain in order to take the player to other areas. For example, selecting the 'BACK' arrow looks at the previous trophy cabinet and the 'NEXT' arrow does the opposite. Whereas the 'MENU' arrow will return the player to the menu.

* All my designs have been deliberately simple so that the art department can take inspiration from them and make them look fantastic for the final product.

More possible cards and achivements (22/2/2014)

Today I worked on possible cards for the game as well as some achievements that could go with them...

Cards:

Looking online, I was able to gather new information on the other cards that included the following...

Unearthed Plug:
  • Electrical fires are less common at home, however, they still present a risk.
  • If you come across faulty or loose wires then never use that electrical device. Not only do you run the risk of being shocked, but you may also cause it to spark and start fires. Instead, take out the plug or switch off the power and wait for a professional to fix it.
  • Use a regular fire extinguisher or a fire blanket to put these types of fires out.

Magnesium:
  • NEVER use water on Magnesium that is on fire as it can continue to burn even without oxygen! Instead, use a Class D fire extinguisher or sand, if you have it in order to smother the flames.
  • Fun Fact: Magnesium is the fourth most common element in the Earth! The others being Silicon, Oxygen and Iron.

Flame-bob Cooker:
  • If the inside of a cooker catches alight keep the door shut and switch off the power. This will stop the flames by cutting off its oxygen supply. If the fire persists then clear the house and call the fire department.
  • Clean the inside of the cooker regularly to avoid food and grease build up that can lead to fires.
  • Obviously, stay with anything that is cooking so as to make sure you are watching it at all times.

Computer:
  • Though only a small chance, computers can start fires. This happens when the components inside are not correct and therefore the system overheats due to stress.
  • Never block off the vents of your computer and make sure to clean the dust out of it, otherwise this can stop the fans from cooling down the computer and result in over heating that leads to fire.

Mechanical Chainsaw:
  • An overheated chainsaw can cause fires when placed on flammable materials, so give the device time to cool down before refueling or using it again.
  • Chainsaws can cause sparks when cutting certain materials, so if cutting outdoors make sure dry leaves and other flammable things are not near by. However, you can attach a spark arrestor to a chainsaw in order to destroy hot exhaust particles.
  • Fires are not the only risk when it comes to chain saws since gasoline powered ones expose users to CO (carbon monoxide) which can be harmful in closed environments.

Oil Spill?
  • You must always be wary if forced to fight an cooking oil fire yourself, after all, adding water can cause the oil to explode.
  • If faced with burning cooking oil use the fire extinguisher Purple K to fight off the Class K fire.

Fireplace:
  • Make sure to always clean out a fire place and its chimney regularly so as to make sure fire is restricted to the fireplace and doesn't expand.
  • Cover the fire with a protective screen to prevent sparks from escaping.
  • NEVER use flammable liquids to try and start a fire quickly.
  • Once a fire has finished burning soak the ashes with water to cool them before placing them in a fireproof metal container outside your home.

Achievements:

Working on the same principle as I did for the previous achievements, you can see some new ones below. You may also notice that I have edited some previous ones in order to update them. However, I believe many of these will change as trying to come up with names for some of them was tricky.

Possible menu designs (21/2/2014)

Asked to come up with what the menu may look like, you can see my process below, despite knowing that it may not make it into the game...

Text:

Using my research on Tower Defence Games, I first worked out what options to include on a menu screen and where they would take the player. For example...

  • Play Game (plays the game)
  • How to Play (shows pages listing all the crucial details of the game and what they mean)
    • Next... (goes to the next page)
    • Back...(goes back a page)
    • Menu (returns the player to the menu)
  • Trophy Cabinet (shows all the trophies unlocked by the player)
    • Next...
    • Back...
    • Menu
  • High Scores (shows the top 10 scores - whether that be regional or just the developers)
    • Next...
    • Back...
    • Menu
  • Credits (shows a page listing all the names of those who worked on the project)
    • Menu

Layout:

My team leader wanted me to take inspiration from the menu as seen in 'Risk of Rain' and adapt it for our own layout.

With the above in mind I then worked on possible layouts seen below, making the backdrop deliberately simple so that the art department would have an idea of how to edit it.

  • Option one includes lights on the side of each menu choice, so that when players put their cursors over one the lights switch on.

  • Option two is simpler with the menu choices being on a bill board of some sort. The background would take up more space so as to include animation in the form of doors opening or hats moving. Lights are now on top of the menu choices so as to make the game seem more urgent / exciting.

  • Finally, with the last option I decided to keep the animated background, but adapt it so that when the player's cursor moves over an menu choice it glows a certain colour. Despite trying to copy another method I have seen before, I think this design is the weakest of the three.

Ways to incorporate simple character creation (19/2/2014)

Considering the possibility that our clients may want the group's game to include the option for the players to design their own character / avatar, I decided to play around with some ideas as seen below...

* Select a pre-made head and have that appear in the corner, similar to picking a profile Mii (fig 1) on the 'Nintendo Wii'. Otherwise, if the option to edit them has to exist, then that could just be skin tone, eyes, mouth, ears, nose, eye brows and hair.

Fig 1:

* Have something similar to the job system in early 'Final Fantasy' games (fig 2) where picking a job would change your character's outfit. In this case however, the player could choose a character build and tone before selecting an outfit to give them e.g. cool, geek, fashionable, casual look etc.

Fig 2:

* Something similar to 'Rune Scape' (fig 3) and 'Dragon Quest IX' (fig 4), but with only 3 simple slots to choose the character's head, body and legs. Gender would be easy to incorporate as that would be determined by the head choice.

Fig 3 and Fig 4:

Overall, even though the above avatars may never be seen in the game, it is the illusion of playing as a character that many people (including myself) enjoy.

However, we may be able to include them visually in the corner of game play and then perhaps show the whole of them during the quiz sections.

Also, since all the above can be designed by our art department and then easily edited by designing all the sprites and their possibilities in advance, I feel that it can be done. For example, the job system example would only require each build to be painted a different tone and then they could be given whichever outfit the player decides on.

Further Fire Cards (12/2/2014)

* Now having the responsibility of Voice Director as well as Narrative Writer, I decided that in preparation for next session I would start to bring forward some ideas that included the voice acting aspects for the game.
  • I ask that anyone comfortable with voice acting or would like to give it a go tell either me or Jim then we can tell them what is or will eventually be available. We can then sort out rehearsals for next week once we know the full list of possible bosses. If you don't get included then it isn't necessarily because we thought you were bad,  but just that another person's voice better suited the part. Though, if possible we would love to give everyone a chance, which may be available through giving each voice the random opportunity to be heard. This could be accomplished by setting the voices to a low percentage chance of playing, we don't want to make the game too noisy after all.
  • Ask Jim and James what possibilities we have with editing the voices, as we may have to change the pitch of someone's voice to match a child's or give someone a static quality as was my idea for the unwired Television last week.
  • Ask if Adam is still planning to do comic book openings and endings to every mission. If he is then I need to find out what the other environments are, what fires are introduced in them so as to suit the emergency and then figure out exactly what is said so as to give Adam something to work with.

* I also decided to do further research and write down more information on possible cards for the different types of fires and extinguishers as seen below...

Fires:

Match Stick Fire:
  • NEVER play with matches! They are NOT toys!
  • Fun Fact: Matches were first invented in 570 BC in China! However, the modern safety match didn't exist until 1844.
  • Fun Fact: The very famous artist L.S. Lowry drew figures known as Matchstick men. You should really check his work out!
  • Use water to fight this Class A fire.

Burning Paper:
  • Many people burn paper to get rid of it. However, if you feel you can't recycle scrap paper and must burn it then ask an adult to help. After all, you don't want to burn yourself or set anything on fire.
  • Use water to fight this Class A fire.

Gas Canister:
  • Gas is held inside canisters under high pressure, therefore, if a canister ruptures or discharges it could cause serious damage!
  • If a fire reaches a gas canister then you should back away from it. Get 200 meters away and wait for fire fighters to take care of it.

Wood Log:
  • If you make a camp fire then you should pour water over it when it is no longer needed. If the extinguished camp fire is still too hot to touch then repeat this process until it isn't. Otherwise the heat may reignite the fire.
  • Use water to fight this Class A fire.

Frying Pan:
  • Never leave a pan on a stove unattended. Before you know, it could ignite what you are cooking and start a fire!
  • If a pan catches fire you should never, EVER remove it from the stove! The heat from boiling oil or other contents can do serious harm to your skin.
  • To stop a frying pan fire you should turn off the stove if you can safely, and then using a damp dishtowel (never a soaking one) throw it over the fire in order to smother it. You can even use two.
  • NEVER use just water on flaming oil as the two don't mix and can cause small explosions!

Cooking Oil:
  • Use the extinguisher most households should have. It is known as Purple K in order to fight off this Class K fire.
  • NEVER use just water on flaming oil as the two don't mix and can cause small explosions!

Ignited Lighter:
  • Just like matches you should NEVER play with a lighter!

Hair Dryer:
  • Make sure you switch off a hair dryer when you have finished with it. After all, it can overheat and ignite a fire when placed on fabric since it can reach temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than boiling oil in a fat fryer!

Unwired Television:
  • Make sure the TV is not plugged in before using carbon dioxide in order to fight off this Class C fire.

Fire Extinguishers:

Water:
  • Perfect for cooling materials as it absorbs the heat that is used to ignite or continue a fire.
  • Incredibly easy to clean up afterwards and inexpensive.
  • Fun Fact: Water consists of the chemical formula known as H2O. This means it contains one part oxygen to two parts hydrogen.

Dry Power:
  • Dry Power helps to separate the four parts of a fire tetrahedron (a four sided shape) e.g. it prevents the chemical reactions involving heat, fuel, and oxygen. It also halts the production of fire sustaining "free-radicals" and as a result extinguishes the fire.

Foam:
  • Can be used on fires whilst not causing flashbacks (explosions).
  • Many types of foam extinguishers exist including AR-AFFF (Alcohol-resistant aqueous film forming foams) which is used to fight alcohol fires. And AFFF (aqueous film forming foam) which is the most common foam extinguisher as it can be used on Class A and B fires and for vapour suppresion.

* Although I am pleased that I got the above information I plan to ask my peers if they have any links they think would be good for information as I struggled a bit to find all the safety information I wanted to get across and had to resort to some historical facts.

Sounds and dialogue (5/2/2014)

* First of all I decided to see if I could abridge the narrative which the team leader approved of, although he asked if the opening could be shorter as compared to the ending it was rather long.
You can see my results below...

Emergency Service Call (abridged):
Estimated time: Reduced from 1 minute 30 seconds to 50 seconds. Yet it still seems like a serious conversation whilst addressing all the points necessary.

Child has finished dialing the phone and is put through to emergency services.

Child: "Help! I really need the fire department!

Operator: "Ok, what number are you dialing from?"

Child: "My mobile number its 0759... err... 0993, 966!"

Operator: "Thank you, please stay on the line as we connect you to your nearest fire and rescue service".

Pause...

Fire Department: "Fire department here, where is the fire? And can you tell us what sort it is?"

Child: "Number 13 Pevel road, Lives-ville. My friend's mum was making chips for us and the chip pan just exploded!"

Fire Department:"That sounds like a chip pan fire! And since your on a main road we can deploy our men far more quickly. Make sure you all stay away from the fire, firefighters are on their way!

Child: "Ok! Please hurry!"

* Having spent a good 2 hours messing around with my voices, singing, acting through improvisation and reading stories of mine last night, I was able to make the following notes and possibilities for the group project today.

Looking over Bonnie's recent drawings I decided to give them possible voices that I felt best matched their appearance and mannerisms (a tactic used in animation and gaming). Making sure not to make them too long or loud so as to avoid too much noise.

Basic enemies:
  • Match Stick and Burning Paper: High pitch gibbering so as to make it clear they are simply goons.
  • Gas Canister: Hollow drumming due to the canister.
  • Frying Pan: Sizzling like bacon would.
  • Cooking Oil: The little pitter patter of glass feet due to the bottle, or slushing noises from its liquid contents.
  • Hair Dryer: Hair drying noises similar to an elephant's trumpet.
  • Unearthed Plug: Snake like hissing which would also go well with electricity.
As I am unable to come up with anything for the Wood Log or Ignited Lighter, I will come back to those another time.

Looking over the bosses next I felt the following voices best suited them.

Flame-bob Cooker:
  • Noticing that the cooker has a big mouth for the oven, I'd imagine this boss to have a deep imposing voice with possibly a blazing inferno sound effect in the back of its throat (similar to what a Diablo character may have). When the little fires pop out of it the cooker could make belching or throwing up sounds, thus maybe my fat disgusting man voice would be good as the oven is quite large as well.

Unwired Television:
  • Looking at this grey faced television I imagined him to either sound like Marvin from 'The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy' with his depressed voice (Vid 1), or Mr.Freeze from 'Batman the animated series' as his voice was both deep and had a very televised /static quality to it (Vid 2). Granted we could always combine the two e.g. a deep depressed voice with a televised /static quality to it, all the while electricity could be coursing through it.

Vid 1:

Vid 2:

I also asked Jon if he could send in anymore examples and received two great audio clips that he worked on for two boss fires. Unfortunately I can not share these clips on Blogger, but none the less they sound great and showed me it could be done.

* With all the above in mind I then worked on a variety of phrases that the bosses could say, deciding to make a list as I felt I was limiting myself by trying to think of particular lines / puns for each individual one.

Therefore, the following lists dialogue that could be integrated / said by any of the bosses and composes of both serious and non serious sentences. In short, anything and everything...

Enter the scene:
  • "Can you feel the heat!?"
  • "I'm coming to get you!"
  • "The Human Torch has nothing on me!"
  • "Hide your furniture and hide your house for this fire is about to put you out!"
  • "Catching Fire? I love that movie!"
  • "I'm so hot steam thinks I'm cool!"
  • "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!"
  • "Come on baby light my fire!"
  • "Like the legend of the Phoenix... WOAH!"
  • "You can't handle this new HOT sensation!"
  • "I think it's time we blow this scene, get everybody and the stuff together... ok! 3, 2, 1 lets jam!"
  • "Ready men!? ("Yes sir!") FIRE!!!"

When Defeated:
  • "NO! This is impossible!"
  • "I'll be back!"
  • "No! I'm evaporating! Evaporating! What a world! What a world!"
  • "NO! I wasn't hot enough!"
  • "But I didn't start the fire! It's been always burning since the worlds been turning!"
  • "Woah! No need to give me the COLD shoulder!"
  • "Hey! No need to put me out so soon!"
  • "Now I know why they call you fire fighters!"
  • "Och! That hurt!"
  • "No fair! You cheated!"
  • "No! How could I lose to a kid? A kid!"
  • "Run away! Run away! Run away!"

When the boss beats the player:
  • "Wow! Much Fire, Such Heat"
  • "Burn baby burn! Disco Inferno!"
  • "Looks like I was too hot for you! HA HA!"
  • "Wow! That heat was intense!"
  • "Come back next time and give me a real challenge!"
  • "Woo! I'm on fire today!"
  • "Whoops! I did it again! HA HA HA!"
  • "That was boring! How about you try harder next time!?"
  • "Ohhhh... BURN!"
  • "Looks like you just got... burned! YEEEAAA!!!"
  • "Hmm... this place looks delicious! I can't wait to swallow it whole! MA HA HA HA HA!"
  • "All I need is some marshmallows and this victory will be complete!"

Voice work (30/1/2014)

* Listened to what others have been doing so far and showed my example cards and openings.

My lecturer was very pleased with my presentation and asked why I didn't present my group's original presentation for our 'Diablo' esk idea as I was very clear and informative. This was great to hear as this filled me with confidence.

Well presented and showed clearly my research. His only concern was that the fire information was text heavy and that the images should perhaps also include the real images of things so as to be further educational.

* I then worked with Jim from the sound department on possible voice acting for the game.We decided that the boss fires should have spoken dialogue so as to announce their presence similar to the "Zombies are coming" from 'Plants Vs. Zombies'.
With the above in mind me came up with the following...

Note that the following will be edited over time...

Boiler: Will have a metallic and bubbling sound over the voice actor's voice.
  • Enter the scene:
  • When defeated: (Steam whistle)
  • When the boss beats the player:
Potential voices include: Dumb/slow, Russian.

Oven: Will have a inferno and door banging sound over the voice actor's voice.
  • Enter the scene: "Prepare for 200 degrees... of pain!"
  • When defeated:
  • When the boss beats the player:
Potential voices include: Masked wrestler, Bane impersonation, Ultimate Warrior impersonation, Hulk Hogan impersonation, Macho Man Randy Savage impersonation.

Electric Radiator: Will have a electric sound over the voice actor's voice.
  • Enter the scene:
  • When defeated:
  • When the boss beats the player:
Potential voices include: David Bowie impersonation, Waspanator impersonation

Chip Pan Fire: Will have a ? sound over the voice actor's voice.
  • Enter the scene:
  • When defeated:
  • When the boss beats the player:
Potential voices include: Weedy/raspy.

Alongside me providing my voice in the game, we also decided that I would now have the added role of voice director in which I will oversee anyone else providing voices for the fire enemies sounds e.g. gibbering similar to the simple zombie sounds in 'Plants Vs. Zombies'.

* Ryan decided that he was happy with the narrative 'Emergency Service Call' opening I came up with despite it being lengthy. He wasn't sure if we should include spoken dialogue or not, but Jim and I said it would be easy to do as we would get it done during the recordings for the enemies.

* Apparently we will eventually show the fire fighters and Remode our work so far. Therefore, I may be asked to showcase my card concept to them as the lecturer liked how I did it today. After all, the cards are a good idea for informing kids and being fun.
