Ways to incorporate simple character creation (19/2/2014)

Considering the possibility that our clients may want the group's game to include the option for the players to design their own character / avatar, I decided to play around with some ideas as seen below...

* Select a pre-made head and have that appear in the corner, similar to picking a profile Mii (fig 1) on the 'Nintendo Wii'. Otherwise, if the option to edit them has to exist, then that could just be skin tone, eyes, mouth, ears, nose, eye brows and hair.

* Have something similar to the job system in early 'Final Fantasy' games (fig 2) where picking a job would change your character's outfit. In this case however, the player could choose a character build and tone before selecting an outfit to give them e.g. cool, geek, fashionable, casual look etc.

* Something similar to 'Rune Scape' (fig 3) and 'Dragon Quest IX' (fig 4), but with only 3 simple slots to choose the character's head, body and legs. Gender would be easy to incorporate as that would be determined by the head choice.

Overall, even though the above avatars may never be seen in the game, it is the illusion of playing as a character that many people (including myself) enjoy.

However, we may be able to include them visually in the corner of game play and then perhaps show the whole of them during the quiz sections.

Also, since all the above can be designed by our art department and then easily edited by designing all the sprites and their possibilities in advance, I feel that it can be done. For example, the job system example would only require each build to be painted a different tone and then they could be given whichever outfit the player decides on.
